This story begins with a rock show in Las Vegas. The evening started out like most nights in Vegas. Booze. Dice. Rock n’ Roll. A band named Soundgarden was playing at The Hard Rock, and it had been a while since they had played together since working on solo projects. The singer Chris Cornell was feeling good that night, and he seemed to be feeding off the energy of the rowdy Vegas crowd. We were enjoying the show about twenty rows back, when Chris asked the crowd if their was any songs that we wanted to hear. Unlike most bands, Soundgarden was capable of playing their entire catalog of songs. Everyone in the first few rows took advantage of this opportunity and started screaming out requests. Chris tried his hardest to listen over the crowd, but it became clear that he just couldn’t make out anyone’s song request .
Ten rows from the stage a small young fan held up a a piece of paper that had some words scribbled on it. Chris saw this attempt of getting noticed, and asked the crowd to pass the paper to him on stage. The crowd followed his direction, and when he received the paper he read the words to the crowd. They were song requests that the fan had prepared before the show. Chris was impressed. He agreed to play the songs on the fan’s list and then did something that threw everyone off. He invited that fan to come up on stage and to wait backstage so that the band could hang out with him after the show. Everyone at the show was jealous….and the fan was about to experience a surreal moment with a rock legend.
Seeing this happen, a light bulb went off in my head. What if I could request a song using my phone to make a eye-catching animated sign that could be seen from a distance that might draw enough attention to experience a surrreal moment like the one I just witnessed? And then the idea became even bigger…what if I could connect my friends devices together and make a digital poster board that could be seen from an even further distance, and be used at concerts, sporting events, or even at the bar. FanU was born.
Born in the 80’s, I was always a fan of music, sports, and girls. Like most guys I would try to get the attention of the opposite sex by finding unique ways to strike up conversation. I quickly found out that simply creating something good would gain all the attention I could ask for. Early on I used my creativity to express myself through art, playing music, and recently through app design.
Being a musician, I love going to concerts and watching the bands that influenced me the most. Living in Las Vegas I am lucky enough to see a lot of great artists, but the desire of being a entrepreneur and spending more time with my family lead to the creation of FanU. Forced to take various jobs in the hospitality industry to provide for my family, I started to learn graphic design at the University of YouTube and Google. Through trial and error, I evolved into a self-taught mobile app designer. I designed the user interface/experience of FanU, and outsourced the development to brilliant freelancers around the world.
Today, as the founder and CEO of FanU, I embrace the many roles that one must focus on in order to turn a vision into a reality. What started as a desire to have a useful concert tool in my pocket that would allow me to request a song in a cool way, has turned into an application that has an endless amount of universal uses. FanU has the potential to be a platform that people all over the world can communicate to one another in a fun and different way. The world we live in craves attention, and sometimes we get more than we expect, and knowing that, maybe one day I might stop trying to get attention or find unique ways to strike up conversation, but what fun would life be if I were to do that...
